Near-Death Experiences

Near-death experiences are a type of out-of-body experience. They occur when someone physically dies for some time and then comes back to life. For example, a cardiac arrest patient can have a near death experience if they die and a doctor resuscitates them. Experiences that take place while someone is simply asleep, or prior to death, or just after being revived are not truly near-death experiences. While a person can still have an out-of-body experience while they are asleep or physically unconscious, the near-death experience takes place in the absence of any life-signs at all, when the brain and body are physically dead.

Where do near-death experiences take place?

Near-death experiences take place in higher dimensions, often in a place called the astral plane. The astral plane is a more spiritual dimension than the physical plane, and it is where you go when you sleep at night. With sleep, your psychology (your thoughts, feelings, and consciousness) leaves the sleeping physical body behind and enters into this other plane of existence. When you do this consciously, it is commonly called 'astral projection.' A near-death experience is also a type of out-of-body experience (OBE) in the astral plane — except that the body is physically dead at the time. Because your consciousness goes into the astral plane, you can see, hear, and touch things there, as well as remember what you have experienced. Your consciousness exists and perceives independently of the physical body. This is why so many people have been able to recall vivid and detailed experiences while their bodies were physically dead.

What commonly happens during a near-death experience?

The astral plane is a real and objective world that mirrors the physical. For this reason, many accounts of near-death experiences are remarkably similar. When a person enters the astral plane during an NDE, they often see the nearby physical world, such as people, buildings, and events occurring. For example, hospital patients often report seeing family members near their beds. Some have even described the specific details of activities that occurred or objects that were present while they were physically deceased. Many people also report experiencing 'the light' or going through a tunnel which leads to a light. This experience can also include a review of one’s life. Other people report spiritual experiences or encounters with spiritual beings. These experiences naturally evoke curiosity about the purpose of existence, and they can radically alter a person's beliefs or lead them to embark on a journey of personal development. For example, famous actress Jane Seymour (who played Dr.Quinn, Medicine Woman) stated that her near-death experience helped her to find more meaning in life. Science has also taken an interest in NDEs, largely because of the many similar accounts that have been reported, including the incredible scenarios where people describe situations that occurred while they were dead. This interest has lead to the largest study ever conducted on near-death experiences, called the AWARE Study, which is currently underway in the United Kingdom and the United States. Conducted by the University of Southampton, this study is attempting to validate accounts of NDEs by placing objects on raised surfaces in emergency resuscitation rooms. The hypothesis behind this study is that people having an NDE should be able to see these specific objects, and in this way the study attempts to determine whether NDEs are real or not.

How can you explore the astral plane now?

Near-death experiences are so fascinating because they provide evidence that you exist beyond this physical life and this three-dimensional world. They prove that your consciousness - the real essence of who you are - continues to exist beyond the death of the physical body. But you don’t have to wait until you die to explore these questions directly. To learn more about death and to explore consciousness outside of the body, you can investigate the astral plane using astral projection. With astral projection, you go to the astral plane safely and securely while the physical body is asleep. Going there consciously, you can see for yourself whether a world beyond the physical exists, and you can discover the truth of eternity.
